Women With Hair Loss Ask: Will My Hair Ever Grow Back?

Female Hair Loss Remedies

Female hair loss continues to rise, causing fear and panic among those who are suffering. Those who are affected often begin anticipating the dreadful thought--that they may soon become completely bald. Searching for answers, they wonder if it is even possible to restore the thickness and volume they once had.

To answer that question one must know what type of condition they are experiencing. There are several types of hair loss conditions that affect women. Most of these can be treated successfully-- and will never cause total baldness. Hair loss only becomes permanent if the underlying follicle has been damaged, destroyed, or completely closed up-no longer alive. Otherwise the potential for regrowth exists.

A category of hair loss that does damage and destroy follicles is called cicatricial alopecia. Cicatricial alopecias are rare, only accounting for approximately three percent of all hair loss conditions. Because the destroyed follicles are replaced with scar tissue, this category of disorders is also known as scarring alopecia. The scarring is below the surface so it cannot be seen on the scalp. Scalp biopsy would confirm whether or not scarring has occurred.

Some of the disorders that are in this category include central centrifugal alopecia, lichen planopilaris, frontal fibrosing alopecia and folliculitis decalvans. Treatment involves saving the surrounding follicles to keep the condition from spreading.

Telogen effluvium is a common hair loss disorder affecting women. Excessive shedding from the roots is the most common characteristic. If the condition is acute, excessive shedding will end and spontaneous regrowth will occur within six months. If the condition is chronic the underlying cause must be determined and treated in order to restore and retain normal growth.

A higher amount of hairs go into the resting (telogen) stage, leaving fewer in the growing (anagen) stage. The longer this persists the sparser the hair becomes. Because the follicles remain alive this condition can be reversed. Any type of imbalance within the body can cause chronic telogen effluvium. There may be more than one factor involved. As the body heals, the hair will respond. Essential oils and other natural remedies can be used in conjunction with correcting any existing imbalances and restoring total over-all health and well-being.

Alopecia areata is known to cause bald patches, but in its severest forms it can cause total baldness on scalp (alopecia totalis) or entire body (alopecia universalis). Even so, the follicles affected by alopecia areata remain alive. It is as if they are asleep, but still fully capable of producing hair again, once they receive the signal to do so.

Because alopecia areata is an autoimmune condition, treatment should involve keeping immune system balanced and calm. This would involve identifying and removing triggers such as food sensitivities, toxins, extreme stress, etc., treating nutritional deficiencies and reducing inflammation. Essential oil treatments are well-known to help "jump-start" and reactivate the follicles of alopecia areata.

Androgenetic alopecia in women-also known as female pattern baldness, is not as extensive or severe as male pattern baldness. It will not cause total baldness in women, as only certain hairs in certain areas are affected. There is a slow, gradual shrinkage of these particular follicles.

With each new growth cycle the affected follicles become a little narrower. Consequently, the hair that grows from the follicle becomes slightly thinner. If left to progress, these hairs can become very fine, providing less and less scalp coverage. Noticeable thinning can occur, especially with early onset.

Those with the inherited tendency towards androgenetic alopecia can slow the progression and inhibit the effects by keeping hormones balanced, reducing inflammation and keeping as healthy as possible. Using essential oil treatments can help keep the follicles healthy, well-nourished and widened to reduce the effects of miniaturization.

Achieving and maintaining physical and emotional balance, correcting any deficiencies, eating a healthy anti-inflammatory diet, and using essential oil scalp treatments can help improve many female hair loss conditions.
